چکیده

A prism spectrograph with an associated SIT television camera, operating as a two-dimensional detector with digital readout, has been used at the 5-m Hale telescope. The system was tested for its ability to subtract the sky spectrum, and was found to produce difference spectra that are essentially photon noise limited. Redshifts of 14 galaxies in clusters with 0.01 ::::; z ::::; 0.4 were obtained, each with exposure times of 90 minutes or less. Nine of the redshifts are new. Redshifts for the remaining five agree with previous values to within the measuring

On the Nature of the Z = 0 X-ray Absorbers: Ii. the Contrast between Local and Agn Host Galaxy Absorption

We search for highly–ionized gas near three AGN host galaxies using the Chandra low–energy transmission grating spectrograph. Strong absorption lines from such gas are seen at z = 0, most likely from one or more of the following components: (1) a Galactic corona, (2) the Local Group medium, and (3) an extended warm–hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) filament passing through our local overdensity. ...

Spectrophotometric properties of galaxies at intermediate redshifts (z~0.2–1.0) I. Sample description, photometric properties and spectral measurements

We present the spectrophotometric properties of a sample of 141 emission-line galaxies at redshifts in the range 0.2 < z < 1.0 with a peak around z ∈ [0.2, 0.4]. The analysis is based on medium resolution (Rs = 500 − 600), optical spectra obtained at VLT and Keck. The targets are mostly “Canada-France Redshift Survey” emission-line galaxies, with the addition of field galaxies randomly selected...

The SAURON project – I. The panoramic integral-field spectrograph

A new integral-field spectrograph, SAURON, is described. It is based on the TIGER principle, and uses a lenslet array. SAURON has a large field of view and high throughput, and allows simultaneous sky subtraction. Its design is optimized for studies of the stellar kinematics, gas kinematics, and line-strength distributions of nearby earlytype galaxies. The instrument design and specifications a...

Spectroscopy of Low Surface Brightness Galaxies with the Hobby-eberly Telescope

We have obtained low resolution spectra of nineteen red and blue low surface brightness galaxies, using the Marcario Low Resolution Spectrograph on the 9.2m Hobby-Eberly Telescope. These galaxies form a very heterogeneous class, whose spectra qualitatively resemble those of high surface brightness galaxies covering the full range of spectra seen in galaxies of Hubble types from E to Irr. We use...

E+A and Companion Galaxies - I : A Catalogue and Statistics

Based on our intensive spectroscopic campaign with the GoldCam spectrograph on the Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO) 2.1-m telescope, we have constructed the first catalogue of E+A galaxies with spectroscopic companion galaxies, and investigated a probability that an E+A galaxy have close companion galaxies. We selected 660 E+A galaxies with 4.0Å < Hδ EW at a redshift of < 0.167 from the Da...
